6 Essential oils that help beat depression

Wondering how Essential Oils and Depression is connected? Did You Know that India has the highest number of cases of depression among South-East India and Western Pacific area? A WHO report says that India and China together account for nearly 50% of the total number of people living with depression around the world. WHO study further suggests that a whopping 36% of Indians are likely to suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. With stats as these, it is clear depression is probably a bigger epidemic than Swine flu or Dengue. Yet given the taboo on mental health in India, this rarely gets talked about.

Given the numbers and the devastating effect of depression- yes depression kills- people have started talking about it and doing something about it. Acknowledging depression is a real and natural phenomenon is the first step to fighting it. And like for any other disease recognising early signs and taking steps to counter it will help. Ayurveda and Aromatherapy can play strong counter-depression roles. In fact, nature’s herbs and spices are potent anti-depression fighters. Essential oils have therapeutic properties that work on your mood to give you a lift. The treatment is as simple as enjoying the oil’s aroma, infused with therapeutic molecules. So if you are stocking up on an anti-depression kit, stock up on these essential oils!

Roman Chamomile

Chamomile is one the best medicinal herbs for fighting stress and promoting relaxation. This is why you see chamomile as a popular ingredient in candles, tea, tincture or essential oil form.

According to research inhaling chamomile vapors is often recommended as a natural remedy for anxiety and general depression.

Lavender

Several investigations suggest anxiolytic (something that reduces anxiety), mood stabilizer, sedative, and neuroprotective properties of lavender. Studies done on people suffering from post-traumatic and post-natal depression have shown the positive mood-enhancing effects of lavender vapor.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang ylang sounds fun and it has amazing benefits for fighting depression. Put a Ylang Ylang diffuser by your bedside or massage it into your skin for happy results.

Vetiver

Vetiver has a tranquil, grounding and reassuring energy, often used in trauma helping with self-awareness, calmness, and stabilization.

Frankincense

Frankincense is great for treating depression and anxiety because it provides a calming and tranquil energy. It also gives you a spiritual lift.

Ashwagandha

Ashwaghanda, with its calming, relaxing, and sedative effects helps beat anxiety. A 2009 study published in the medical journal “PLoS One,” shows that ashwagandha is an effective and safe naturopathic option to help reduce anxiety.

Essential oils can be used in three forms for treating depression:

  1. You could opt for Aromatherapy. When the scent of an essential oil is inhaled, molecules enter the nasal cavities and stimulate a firing of mental response in the complex system of nerves and networks of the brain. These stimulants regulate stress or calming responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, production of hormones and blood pressure.
  2. Some essential oils can also be ingested but it is critical to making sure that the oils are pure and safe and recommended by known experts and practitioners for you.
  3. Applying essential oil based products on your skin can be a third way as these oils diffuse into your skin while their vapors invigorate your senses. Given the potent nature of essential oils mixing them with the right carrier oil is important.
