Common chemicals in beauty products & their natural alternatives

“You look too old.”

“Your skin isn’t fair enough.”

“Your hair is greying prematurely.”

“Your hair fall is our of control!”

These are just some of the claims by the cosmetic industry aimed at making you buy more of their products. Products that only offer superficial respite, often to non-existent problems! Packed with a ton of harmful chemicals, these cosmetics are rarely safe for use. Let us look at three common harmful chemicals used in modern cosmetics, and their natural alternatives.

Essentially a synthetic polymer, this organic silicone compound is responsible for upholding the claims of a supple and soft skin in most cosmetic products. It is also used in shampoos to make the hair shiny.

The downside is that it is a hormone disruptor, which means it inhibits hormonal functions, and can increase risk of infertility.

Natural Alternative- Natural Oils

Natural oils like coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, etc help moisturise and feed nutrients, thus keeping the skin and hair well nourished and healthy; while Dimethicone strips the skin of its natural moisture and smothers the pores. Thus any natural products with infused natural oils is a recommended alternative to cosmetics with Dimethicone in them.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives that are found extensively in shampoos, conditioners, soaps, body washes, make up, toothpaste… and the list goes on! Studies have shown that Parabens are linked to several health problems like allergies, skin toxicity, tissue irradiation, and even cancer.

Natural Alternative- Essential Oils

Packed with all natural goodness, essential oils also act as an effective preservative! Unlike Parabens, the essential oils are completely non toxic and break down relatively easily without causing harm to the skin. Many all-natural skin care products use essential oils as a primary ingredient, and are often mentioned on the back label of the product.

Phthalates are a class of some of the most widely used solvents in the world. They are used to manufacture a variety of products such as building materials, plastics, adhesives, pesticides, etc. They are used to manufacture hair care and skin products like shampoos, creams, lotions, and lipsticks as well. Apart from being excellent solvents, they also have a fragrant smell, which makes them all the more appealing for use in the cosmetic industry.

However, they are also known to cause developmental issues, organ toxicity, cancer and neurological disorder among other health problems.

Natural Alternative- NONE!

Sadly, there are no natural alternatives to Phthalates, and it is best to avoid them at all costs! So then next time you are out shopping for personal care products, steer away from products that have abbreviations like DEP, DMP, DBP, and DEHP on the back labels.

However, if you are particular about the fragrance of your beauty product, you can opt for products with flower extracts that sport a natural fragrance.

Your skin and hair is actually more sensitive than you think. Keeping yourself well nourished naturally is the best way to care for them. Hence, do away with cosmetics that have harsh chemicals in them, and opt for all natural alternatives instead! At Vedaearth, we produce all natural, harsh chemical free, vegan, ayurvedic aromatherapy products that nourish you from within.
