5 Ways your cosmetic tube is pranking you

How careful are you really about skincare or what you put on your skin? Probably not half as much as you are about what you eat. Here is a guide to bloopers that you should watch out for a while shopping for skincare. Or you get tricked into using substances that are positively toxic and can cause long-term damage.

  1. Death By Jargons

Many cosmetics manufacturers continue using known harmful substances in the composition. The reason could be that these substances are easy to source or just achieve quick results at the cost of long-term damage.

You can check the safety data on all ingredients, but problems occur when the manufacturers do not list the recognised INCI (International Names of Cosmetic Ingredients). Instead, they use either made up names or complex chemical trade names making it tough for the average consumer to look up. So thumb rule #1: If you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it.

  1. Organic? Not Really?

The chemical definition of “organic” is ‘a compound that contains a carbon atom’. Since carbon is found in anything that has ever lived, certain cosmetic companies use synthetic chemicals derived from petroleum products and describe them as “organic preservatives”!

Look out for accredited certifications like ECOCERT, USDA Organic, NPOP India certifications can tell you if your brand is really organic or a glorified carbon compound.

  1. All that is green is not Ayurveda

Ayurveda makes sense for the skin. But not every brand claiming to be ayurvedic is ayurvedic. What you have to look out for is the proprietary Ayurvedic medicine mark or the ayurvedic cosmetic mark on the label to ensure that your product is ayurvedic and safe for your skin.

  1. All Natural? They just made that up.

Tonnes of products claiming to be all natural have synthetic ingredients in them. The key again is being careful and checking the label for all the ingredients individually. Spot something ‘unnatural’ –pun intended? Don’t use it!

  1. Smell good. Fall Sick!

All of us love smelling good, and we may just be tempted to pick up the tube with fragrance listed in its ingredients. “Fragrance” can mean any of thousands of combinations of chemicals whose identities are not disclosed. You could be allergic to some of them, the toxic stuff in the chemicals can cause a number of health hazards including asthma. So the next time you want to smell good, reach out for something natural.
